Time out for art…

I love to travel and for the past 5 years, with Jack, I have covered many thousands of miles/kilometres around Australia.

I have now been back home 4 months, stationary, in one place, sedentary, settled almost. The longest time sleeping in my bed since 2010. It has been long enough to start joining groups and creating routines. In the past I have dabbled with art, painting and drawing, but now, for 4 months, I have enjoyed being part of an art group and taking “time out for art

Denise Kirk, our talented tutor, has rekindled my interest in art and sketching. This is a pencil and pen sketch of part of our garden.

Denise encourages us to try other media and this is my first attempt at using pastels. It is not fully finished yet as I have more detail to put in her hair.

Finally I would like to show you this acrylic painting of our colourful native lorikeets. This is a painting I did over 12 years ago. Put your sun glasses on as it is loud and bright, just like the character of these birds. This painting is now sold. In a way I will be sad to see it leave home. It will leave a large empty space where it hung for all those years.

But as Denise says, “do not become too attached to your paintings, if you did it once, you can do it again. Look on the first one as a practice”.

The gypsy in me is getting restless, this is a huge country and still plenty to explore, so in 3 weeks we will be on the move again.

Have you seen Lisa of “Zeebra Designs and Destinations” she is a very talented artist who shares her works of art with us every Thursday and encourages us to join her. So Lisa this post is for you.

  1. You’ve been hiding your light under a bushel! I love the sketch and that portrait is purely beautiful, Pauline 🙂 I thought it must be nearly time to get restless 🙂

  3. I’m so impressed by your many talents: three different mediums too. I particularly love the garden “sketch”. I hope you can keep up at least the sketching on the move. I’ve seen some wonderful travel sketchbooks, and sketches would be a great record along with your photos. I’m looking forward to seeing more.

    • Jack is a master at the quick sketch. He has so many sketch books from our early travels, then he got a camera and the sketch books were put away. But going to an art group has rekindled his love of drawing and he inspires me too, but I am very slow with a very different style to Jack.

  5. I knew that Jack had his jottings and sketches, I had no idea you were similarly talented! Your garden sketch is lovely, I have a craving to do some pencil sketching. And I love the lorikeets – both real and in your painting, though back at my daughter’s I am NOT loving next-door’s parrots and cockatoos!

    • Thanks Jill for your kind words. The camera takes over when I’m travelling. but I’m enjoying the slower challenge of sketching now I have the time.

  10. Beautiful sketch of your garden, Pauline. That pastel portrait is very good. Are they difficult to work with? Those Lorikeets really are bright. I’m sure you’re going to miss having them around. 🙂

  12. It’s so nice to settle in and get back into routines and into artistic pursuits, isn’t it Pauline? I am in that mode now, although, like you, I wonder how long before the wanderlust will kick in again. Where will you head off to this time? Your sketch of your garden is marvelous, and I love those colorful lorikeets!

    • It is good to be home Cathy, a novelty even!!! But always simmering at the back of the mind is “where to next”???
We go house sitting down the coast, then away to New Zealand again.

  13. These are delightful – much more than dabbling for sure! All capture the eye in their own way but those lorikeets are amazing! I admire your ability to pull up roots and constantly explore…although knowing your home is still there for you is reassuring. Look forward to your future adventures!
