I am back home for a while so today I would like to take you with me on a SHORT tour around the canals of the Goldcoast. The tourist and theme park capital of Queensland.
So welcome aboard this rather short boat…
The Goldcoast became popular as a tourist area in the 1930’s when people travelled south from Brisbane to enjoy the beach and surf of this fabulous area. Developers saw the potential and in the 1950’s and 60’s major development took place to drain the swamp (now more politically correct to call it wet-lands) and create a network of canals.
The sections that lined the canals had water views and became exclusive and expensive millionaire properties. This two hour cruise aboard the Jindalee (Click the link for more details of price and times)gives you a close up look at some of these palatial homes. (maybe we will get to house sit in one of them!) Image of some of the canals from Google images
After being served a cup of coffee and scone we arrived back on dry land to catch the bus home…
I hope you enjoyed your cruise with me and a brief look at the way the wealthy live on the Goldcoast.

Cruise over to Ailsa’s blog, “Where’s my backpack” to see how other bloggers have been caught short.
Only heard of the canals two years ago. Did not realise it was a ‘wetland’ in previous years

Thank you for commenting. A lot of the Goldcoast area is flood prone and insurance premiums are very high, especially since the last floods in 2010 and 2011. I’m not sure if they would allow all the drainage now-a-days. Wetlands are slowly disappearing every where

This is like Miami and Fort Lauderdale with very similar architecture too! I’d love to live by the water again (did so for a couple of years in South Africa) but can’t afford to now. Lovely photos PP.

I think they have a covenant in the sale of water side properties that they have to build BIG expensive houses. I would like to live near the water and build a small cottage, but the building plans would not be approved

Never mind – I’m sure you’re happier where you are. I liked seeing the waterways, never knew they were there, are they new? I was up around the Gold Coast in 1998.

Yes they were there in 1998 (that is the year we moved to Australia) they drained the swamp that was here and created the canals back in the 1950’s

Nice to look at, so thanks for taking me along 🙂 I would not want to own a house that large personally.

Thanks for coming on the cruise with me. I agree about big houses, I would always feel like a visitor, never really feel at home like I do in our very small Granny flat…

I guess I also look at it and think I wouldn’t have to worry about the cleaning and upkeep. I know you can hire folks for stuff like that, but you would still have to handle all that. No thanks, I’ll just go on your cruise, take a look, and then go home 🙂

I suppose if you can afford to buy one of those places you can afford an army of servants as well…

I like your house so much more. I’m not a huge fan of steel and glass boxes though!

No I agree Cindy I think they feel very cold and impersonal, I prefer the old character filled homes. Maybe it is an age thing!!! 🙂
