This is a smasher Pauline … just look at those outstretched feathery ‘fingers’ you’ve captured ! It must be a lovely feeling for a pelican to become airborne after all the effort you’ve described Lol

As others have said this is a wonderful photo of an extraordinary creature. So improbable that it would fly especially with it’s big heavy beak. I would not have thought of this for graceful but it sure is๐

I’m always amazed at how graceful they are in flight, a bit like a jumbo jet I wonder how they will ever stay up there…

It’s difficult to capture a moving bird, Pauline, but you did a fabulous job on this one. What a beautiful bird and a wonderful capture of it in flight. ๐

It was a bit of a fluke a whole flock of them took off together so it was just snap, snap, snap and I got lucky…

I find it amazing that they can fly, a bit like a jumbo jet. How do they get up there??? More to the point how do they stay up there…

Glad you did. My husband’s mom use to love pelicans. Now that she’s gone, we’ve got a wooden pelican in our shore house. It’s very pretty. Colorful. Jeff will move it from here to there to kind of give ‘her’ a different view every once in a while (after typing this, it sounded kind of creepy, but it’s really very endearing.)

I think the idea of moving the pelican around is a lovely idea, keeping the memory of your Mom alive. I have another photo, somewhere, of a pelican landing and it is driving me mad that I can’t find it. I really should take the time to catalogue and tag the thousands of photos better (make that at all!!!)… ๐ฆ

Wonderful capture, Pauline. Very graceful inflight, but their landings leave a bit to be desired. ๐

They are beautiful for such a big bird Gilly and it is magic to watch them skimming just above the waves on the ocean. But they are not graceful on the take off lots of flapping and pedalling of the legs to get up and away…
