All a Flutter in Surfers Paradise…

A giant, green inflatable octopus has invaded the Islander Backpackers Hostel in Surfers Paradise. I couldn’t miss it as its tentacles fluttered and floated in the breeze.

This is an “in air installation” created by artist Filthy Luker (yes that is his name, I checked!).

“He is a mixed media artist who transforms the urban environment with art that is playful and mischievous to artistically assault his audience.” (quote)

This is part of the sand safari that is running this month. I will show you more later this week. I can’t believe that it is a year since I took photos of the last event.

Ailsa has chosen the theme “flutter” for this weeks challenge. I thought this was appropriate.

  2. That’s cool. Love it. However, if I were a resident backpacker, and I had a bit of alcohol on board and I forgot there was artwork outside, that could be a frightening situation. 🙂

  8. I don’t suppose you can stay in the rooms emiting the tentacles, but it sure is captivating!

    • I think they will still put back packers in those rooms, they will probably think it is a buzz. Good travel story when they get home

yes went to Surfers last week to see the sand sculptures but they hadn’t started even though they said they started on the 5th. Not one had been started, crates of sand sat there. lots of people were very p…. off . I don’t think I will even bother going back to see them. I know they extended the time for another 10 days but Let the public know. They are so organised its not funny. Last year I went and saw them nearly the last day maybe that’s the best time to go when almost finished. Saw the one at the local pines that’s it. well enough about that have a nice week

    • Me too Toni. I went specifically to get photos before the weekend crowds but all I got was the octopus tentacles. I was annoyed too as they did say they would be from Feb 5th. I’m planning to go tomorrow so watch this space…
