A Flower a Week : Jacaranda

jacaranda lr-9_2862x3816

This is Jacaranda time and these stunning trees are in full flower. The Jacaranda tree is a native of south-central South America, but is found all round the world in tropical and sub-tropical regions.

I went for a drive this morning to capture the beauty of these trees. At the moment they are at their peak flowering. As I stood under them taking photos I was enveloped in their soft sweet perfume, but if it rains or strong winds blow the petals will fall and create a carpet of mauve then it will be over until next year.

This is one of my favourite paintings from the Brisbane Art Gallery.

  2. What a stunning flowering tree – and nice place to have some tea! Rivers’ painting reminds me of a Monet. I have never heard of the jacaranda and your many views of this tree gives a good feel – and the carpet of mauve reminds me of when the cherry blossoms shed their petals and it looks like pink snow….

  3. My parents lived in India for awhile and my mother always loved jacaranda trees. They are such lovely trees and your photographs do them great justice. I miss NZ and all the beautiful flowers and plants there as well as the birdsong especially the beloved Tui.

  11. I love your jacaranda pics and the painting. Really reminds me of when we lived in Johannesburg. The streets in our suburb were lined with jacarandas. šŸ™‚

    • There is a town called Grafton, south of here, and they have the main streets lined with Jacarandas and they have a Jacaranda festival, next weekend I think. It is on my list of still to see…

    • I rushed out yesterday to get these photos when a friend who lives in that area told me they were at their peak. If the weather changes they can be blown off over night.
