When you think of Australia what pops into your mind?
This land down under has unique flora and fauna and I think the kangaroo is one of the symbols that people associate with Australia.
Everyone who comes here thinks the Koala is so cute and cuddly.
They look so harmless, but beware they have very sharp claws.
Never smile at a crocodile, they can jump and also run, so keep well away from the water’s edge in the tropical parts of Australia…
The dingo looks like the family pet, but don’t be tempted to pat him, he has a nasty temper.
As for the Tasmanian Devil, he is devil in name and devil in nature. Its oversize head houses sharp teeth and strong, muscular jaws that can deliver, pound for pound, one of the most powerful bites of any mammal.
The snake is another of the scary creatures that live in Australia. This one was living in a tree in my back yard.

There are also birds and maybe one of the most colourful is the lorikeet. They travel in large flocks and though they look beautiful they have a very loud screechy voice.
The kookaburra’s raucous laugh is, to me, the symbol and sound of Australia.

Giddy, Pauline, For me it would have to be a koala. My parents brought me a toy Koala after they visited my brother in Aussie. I cuddled it so much I wore the fur off its ears! Fortunately, its claws were a kind of soft plastic. Some of those other creatures in your post look a bit on the scary side.

Very sad story about the snake. We loved having him living with us, but unfortunately one of the neighbours (and we never knew which neighbour)didn’t like snakes and killed him. We found him under one of our bushes where he had crawled to die.

These are all great symbols of Australia, Pauline. I love the Koala bears, they do look deceivingly cute and cuddly. I always think of Crocodile Dundee when I see Australian crocodiles. I would sure love to visit there one of these days!

Now it is going to be in my head all day Jude… I LOVE that version you have posted it is so a symbol of Aussie music and took Aussie larrikinism to the world. When I wrote “land of down under” in the post I had the song bubbling away in the back of my head….

Yes the Kookaburra is part of the kingfisher family. Probably the largest member of the family. Did you see Jude’s comment and her link to the “Men at work” film clip? It is worth watching…

G’day Del, there are so many colourful birds over here but most of them live in the bush, but the lorikeets are city and bush dwellers so we see lots of them…
