Hamilton Gardens

Hamilton Gardens

When we lived in Hamilton, the main city in the Waikato area, the river was mainly ignored. It ran behind the main CBD and all the shops and offices faced away with the back doors and rubbish bins stacked along the banks. That was back in 1982. What a difference now. A beautiful garden area has been created along the banks and it is styled with hedges and walkways around a central courtyard into a number of garden rooms celebrating garden styles from around the world and back through the ages. It makes for a very interesting few hours as we explored the different styles. The Maori stockade surrounded by traditional carvings and the fence made of sharpened titree branches to protect in the olden days from invading tribes. Complete with a garden planting of kumera and flax. To the Italian Renescence, English cottage, Japanese contemplation, Chinese, Indian, even an American modernist style with a large portrait of Marilyn Monroe made from mosaic.

It was good to revisit the old home town and see so much renovation going on…

  1. Oh yes! You will recognise these when I get time to write a post about my visit today (sadly in mizzle) they also have a new Tropical Garden and are working on a Tudor Garden and a new Surrealist Garden, so plenty to entice you back there. I spent half an hour in the Rose Garden too which is one of the largest I have visited. The smell in the soft rain was a real delight.

    • I may get chance to visit again when we go over in April. Looking forward to seeing your post on the gardens, sounds as though it has expanded quite a lot in 3 years
