Hartley Arms Hotel Back Packers, Clyde

Clyde Back Packers, originally uploaded by gypsy woman1.

Only a short way along the road we drove into Clyde. A living heritage village, rich in the history of the gold rush era of 1860’s. All it needed to take us back 100 years would be horse-drawn vehicles. Every house and building along the main street was built of the local stone and dated from the late 1800’s. We picked up a brochure of the historic town walk and strolled around reading the plaques attached outside lovingly restored houses with cottage style gardens. Roses, lavender, hollyhocks all old english favourites were a riot of colour.

We stopped in our tracks and looked at each other when we saw the sign hanging above, what was a pub in an earlier life, and now announced it was a backpackers. An arrow in the window pointed to the entrance gate at the side of the building. Yes they did have a bunk room available so we went round the back to see it. It was tiny.not much bigger than Matilda, our Toyota pop-top we travelled around Australia in, but clean. You would not be able to swing the proverbial cat around in it!!! The shower and toilet room was outside but right next door. The tiny kitchen was serviceable. The hotel was built in 1869. If walls could talk what tales they could tell. We definitely decided to stay the night…

The bunk-house, it was very warm and cosy.
