Haast Pass

Haast Pass, originally uploaded by gypsy woman1.

This is another magical place. It is a fairyland of ferns, fungus and dainty, dancing leaves of the Kahikatea, a native New Zealand tree. This is the only area of this forest type left. Every branch is draped and dripping with moss. The air is still and the distintive smell of the New Zealand bush fills my senses A fantail dips and darts around catching insects. The steady roar of the water fall is punctuated by bird calls. The distinctive cry of the cat bird and unusual sting like sound of the whip bird.

Amazing fungus growth

Fantail hard to get a clear photo they move so quickly

I tried for a long time to get a decent photo of this friendly little bird as he darted and swooped around me. I didn’t succeed, he was way to fast, this was the best of a mediocre group of photos.

  1. Lovely I was just in NZ myself for 6 weeks for a family wedding. It was so wonderful to visit family and friends as well as NZ itself again. I will get some photos posted soon.
