Monday dawned a grey and windy sort of day. As we ate breakfast a neighbouring camper came over to say a storm warning had just been given over the radio, had we heard it?
Ok what to do now. Visions of cyclone Yasi flashed through my mind.We decided to pack the van down incase we had to move. After hundreds of moves we have it down to a fine art and in 15 minutes we were in moving mode. The wind was getting stronger and the rain was torrential, felt almost gale force to me, but the locals laughed and said just a strong breeze. We decided to go to the library to spend time out of the weather but unfortunately the library closed on Monday so plan B we went to the local RSL and spent the morning reading our books.
This is a photo of the devastation at Cardwell in February 2010. The shops in the background are where Bec had her boutique.
The worst of this storm hit Townsville, which is approx 80km north of Ayr. Over 100 lightning strikes and flash flooding. The heavy rain here was appreciated by Del as she didn’t have to keep moving the sprinklers around. November is the start of the cyclone season up here so definitely time to move south again. Tomorrow we head out toward Proserpine and Mackay and the weather forecast is for storms and rain for the rest of this week…
