Beachport was only 45kms from Robe. This is a lovely area to explore as, unlike Western Australia, the distances between townships are only a short drive and so you see a lot in one day.
This is now very good agricultural land, but it was originally swamp and an excellent museum in Beachport documents how the land had 100’s of  kms of drains dug to drain the area. Now they are having to irrigate so are rethinking what had been done in the past…

Woakwine cutting

This amazing feat of engineering was achieved by two men starting in 1957 he cut this drain through solid rock to drain his land.The Woakwine cutting took 3 years. Check the link for more details, or go to Millicent museum for an excellent video…
