We have discovered a great way to meet people and get to know areas. It is “couch surfing”
This was our first experience of couch surfing and what a great experience it was. It is a computer based organisation and after you join and log on you can search anywhere in the world or, in our case, Australia, to see if any one in the places you are going to visit has a bed that you can use while you explore that area. When we contacted Naomi she made us feel very welcome and we had 3 days staying with her and getting to know Geraldton. Jack especially appreciated having a full size bed he could stretch out in with out his feet hanging over the end. It was a change not to have to pack up the van each time we went sight-seeing.
Geraldton has changed so much in 5 years it has redesigned all the esplanade area. Having removed the train lines that ran along the beach front it now has an attractive area for recreation, walking and the atmosphere of the town is more upbeat. It has a great museum and art gallery, and the memorial to HMAS “Sydney” that is built on top of the hill overlooking Geraldton and the ocean is very symbolic with the dome being created of 645 stainless steel seagulls.
After spending 3 days with Naomi we felt we had made a new friend and we look forward to meeting more couch surfing friends. The next ones will be in Perth…
